Shipping is the largest line on an agent haul and the only one you can meaningfully control. This page explains what the bill is made of, why the estimate you made before buying almost never matches it, and what happens when the parcel reaches your border.
What is the USfans shipping bill made of?
You pay in two rounds, which is where most of the confusion starts. Round one, at purchase, is small. Round two, when you ship, is the real one:
- International freight — chargeable weight × the rate of your chosen line.
- Warehouse extras — repacking, reinforcement, extra QC photos, insurance.
- Import duty and VAT — charged in your country, outside the USfans panel, unless you pick a duty-paid line.
- Carrier clearance fee — the courier's own handling charge for filing the customs declaration.
What is chargeable weight, and why do estimates go wrong?
Airlines bill the greater of two numbers: the actual weight and the volumetric weight derived from the parcel's dimensions. On top of that, the weight used is measured after the warehouse repacks, not taken from the seller's listing. Two consequences catch people out:
- A puffer jacket shipping for more than boots. It weighs 800 g and fills half a carton — you are paying for the volume.
- A "1.9 kg" parcel arriving at 2.3 kg. The free shipping threshold of 2 kg is decided on the shipping screen, after the warehouse weighs it.
The practical move is to tick the remove-packaging options before you pay. On a typical haul that is a few hundred grams and a lot of carton — often the difference between two weight brackets.
Which shipping line should you pick?
The shipping screen shows several lines with different prices, transit windows and rules about what they will carry. Instead of taking the cheapest, compare:
- Rate per kilo and minimum billable weight. On a light parcel the minimum, not the rate, decides the price.
- Transit time. Economy lines can run three weeks; express usually lands inside one.
- Tracking and insurance. Without them, a lost-parcel claim is effectively unwinnable.
- Restrictions. Batteries, liquids, cosmetics and branded logos are barred from some lines entirely.
Some lines come in a duty-paid (DDP) variant, where import tax is bundled into the shipping price and the courier does not bill you on delivery. Convenient, but not tax-free — the cost is inside the rate.
Will you pay customs duty and VAT?
Where you live changes your final bill more than which agent you use. The rules that matter:
- European Union. Import VAT on every parcel regardless of value — the €22 low-value exemption was abolished on 1 July 2021. Customs duty applies above €150 of intrinsic goods value (freight and insurance excluded from that threshold, but included in the VAT base). Rates vary by member state; Poland, for instance, charges 23%.
- United Kingdom. Import VAT on all parcels; customs duty above £135 of goods value.
- United States. The long-standing $800 de minimis exemption stopped applying to low-value parcels during 2025. Treat any "it's under $800, so it's free" advice written before then as out of date and check current CBP guidance.
- Australia. GST applies to imported goods, with low-value consignments generally taxed at the point of sale up to A$1,000.
Where a seller or marketplace uses a scheme like the EU's IOSS, VAT is collected at checkout and the parcel clears without a second bill. Agent shipments usually do not work that way, so budget for paying on arrival.
What not to do
Under-declaring a parcel's value is not a customs trick, it is a false declaration — it exposes you to back-taxes, penalties and seizure, and the liability sits with the importer, meaning you, not the agent. Separately, customs authorities are empowered to detain and destroy goods that infringe trademarks. Anyone ordering replicas is carrying that risk personally; no agent, line or coupon removes it. How do you actually cut the freight bill?
- Consolidate. Three parcels means three minimum charges and three clearances. One combined shipment almost always wins.
- Kill volume. Remove boxes, ask for compression — you are billed on the greater of two weights.
- Respect the promo threshold. With free shipping under 2 kg, sending the light haul separately can beat bundling one heavy item into it.

- Watch the duty threshold. A very large single parcel can push the whole haul over €150 or £135 and attract duty on everything in it. Splitting genuinely separate shipments across time is legitimate; splitting to disguise one shipment's value is not.
